Debug potential kernel panic

Hi,

Every time I connect a USB2Serial converter (FTDI 232) my Pi halts. I assume
a kernel panic is the reason for that, but I have no "evidence" yet, neither do
I have an idea why that's the case. When booting the Pi with the device connected
the device gets initialized correctly, only hot-plug seems to be a problem.

Long story short: how can I retrieve a kernel dump/log/error message? I thought
about kdump, but maybe there are simpler ways to do so...
